Short answer
Use a one-off prompt for a small, well-understood task when a capable reviewer can inspect the result. Use this skill pack when the rendering work recurs, spans architecture and implementation, or needs a repeatable evidence contract. A good project prompt is still required: it supplies the goal and local constraints while the selected skill supplies specialist procedure.
For this comparison, a general AI prompt means free-form task instructions outside a reusable Agent Skills package. It is not a named product, so the page does not assign it a universal price, feature list, or quality score.

A prompt can be more specific than any shared skill. It can name a product's art direction, coordinate convention, device budget, existing render graph, and acceptance criteria. The skill is valuable when it prevents each prompt author from having to rediscover stable Three.js mechanisms, failure modes, and validation rules.
Choose a one-off prompt when
- The change is narrow and its mechanism is already understood.
- The repository has unusual constraints that dominate generic guidance.
- An experienced graphics engineer will review every changed line and runtime side effect.
- The task is exploratory and the result will not become a repeated team workflow.
- Existing project documentation already owns the required architecture and verification contract.
A precise prompt can also be the correct way to reject a skill recommendation. If a project intentionally remains on WebGLRenderer, the prompt should say so. The router must respect that boundary rather than forcing a WebGPU migration.
Choose the skill pack when
- The same class of task appears across projects or team members.
- Several rendering systems must share signals without duplicating scene renders.
- An agent needs to choose among representations before writing code.
- The workflow requires diagnostics, backend proof, mutation controls, or repeatable visual evidence.
- The instructions and their update history need to be inspectable in the repository.
The pack also provides a refusal boundary. A skill should name a missing semantic-scene, asset-pipeline, or lighting owner instead of inventing authority. A generic prompt can request anything, but that flexibility does not establish that the model has the current mechanism or evidence needed to answer safely.
The useful combination
Use the prompt for facts that are unique to the current task:
- the desired outcome;
- existing source and ownership boundaries;
- supported devices and performance targets;
- coordinate systems, units, and content scale;
- what may or may not be changed;
- the acceptance evidence the team needs.
Use the selected skills for stable specialist guidance:
- renderer and representation choices;
- resource and lifecycle accounting;
- pass, storage, history, and final-output ownership;
- known failure conditions;
- validation procedure and diagnostic views.
The agent should then read the actual project, reconcile any conflict, implement only the requested scope, and verify the result. Neither a prompt nor a skill makes source inspection optional.
Moving from prompts to skills
Do not convert every old prompt into a new skill. First separate recurring domain rules from project-specific intent. Keep local names, art direction, target numbers, and one-time constraints in project documentation or the prompt. Move only stable, reusable procedure into the selected skill workflow.

Limitations
The pack cannot infer missing product requirements, guarantee model behavior, or replace a knowledgeable reviewer. A badly routed skill can add irrelevant context, and a focused prompt can outperform it for a one-line, well-contained change. Conversely, a long prompt copied between projects can become an unversioned playbook with stale APIs and no maintenance owner.
Do not claim that either route always uses fewer tokens, finishes faster, or produces better graphics. Those are measurable properties of a specific model, prompt, repository, and task, not facts implied by the content format.
